What is the Sunbird Messaging App?

Sunbird is an Android app that brings iMessage, Google Messages (RCS), and SMS together in one inbox on your phone, with no second Apple device, no home server, and no desktop software to manage. It also includes a primary and secondary inbox, so you can keep your most important conversations front and center in your primary inbox and everything else neatly organized. WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Facebook Messenger, and many more are on the way, along with a web app so you can message from your computer too.

How can I use Sunbird?

Sunbird is available now on the Google Play Store. Just download the app, create your Sunbird account, and start your 14-day free trial. From there, the onboarding screens will walk you through connecting iMessage and Google Messages, and then you're ready to text away. Follow each onboarding step closely for the smoothest experience. Setup only takes a few minutes.

How is Sunbird different from other unified messaging apps?

Sunbird is the only "iMessage for Android" app where you need only your Android device. No personal server, Apple device, or desktop software is required. Your messages from the Sunbird app appear as blue bubbles to iPhone and Mac users. Sunbird supports iMessage, Google Messages (RCS), and SMS/MMS, with more messaging apps on the way.

How safe is my data when I use Sunbird?

Security is built into how Sunbird works, starting with the most important thing: we don't store your messages. Your conversations live on your device and your recipient's, not on our servers. Your messages are encrypted on your device, in transit, and at rest, and the final leg to an iPhone is protected by Apple's own iMessage end-to-end encryption. We don't store your Apple ID password or keep an authentication token, and each user's iMessage connection runs in its own private space that's torn down when you disconnect. How fast is Sunbird to set up on my Android device?

Setting up Sunbird takes just a few minutes. After you install the app and create your account, connecting iMessage and Google Messages takes a few more minutes through the onboarding screens.

Do I need a Mac or Apple device to make this work?

No Apple or Mac device is needed! Only your Android phone. You don't have to create or maintain an Apple server in your closet or some complex virtual machine to jump into iMessage conversations. Sunbird was created for the masses.

Does Sunbird use my data plan?

If your device is not connected to a Wi-Fi network, Sunbird messages will be sent over cellular data, incurring data usage. This means that cellular data rates may apply, depending on your carrier.

Does Sunbird work internationally?

Yes. Sunbird works anywhere in the world as long as you have an Internet connection. International roaming data rates may apply.

Does Sunbird work without Wi-Fi?

Yes. If you do not have a Wi-Fi connection, messages sent from the Sunbird app will be sent over your cellular network.

Can Sunbird work in Airplane Mode?

Yes. You can send and receive iMessages or RCS Messages when you're connected to in-flight Wi-Fi.

Is there a way to back up or archive messages?

Yes. Sunbird has a local backup and restore feature on your Android device. You can create an encrypted backup of your messages, secured with an encryption key that you keep, and restore it when you set up Sunbird on a new device. A cloud backup option is on the roadmap.

Can you send images and videos in full quality?

Images and video are able to be sent uncompressed and high resolution via the Sunbird app. The only file size or type limits are those imposed by the native messaging app.

How much does Sunbird cost?

Are there plans for a desktop client?

No, there are currently no plans for a desktop client. However, we do plan to launch a desktop-accessible web app that will seamlessly integrate with the Sunbird account you use on your phone.

Will Sunbird work on a tablet?

The Sunbird app, while not optimized for a tablet screen, will work on most Android tablets.

Will the app be open source?

No, due to commercial and legal requirements, there are no plans to make the Sunbird source code open source.

Can I use Sunbird on two devices with the same account details?

Sunbird runs on one Android device at a time, so it can't be active on two phones at once. Moving to a new phone is straightforward, though. On your current device, unlink iMessage and create an encrypted backup of your messages, keeping the encryption key somewhere safe. Then, on your new device, set up Sunbird and restore that backup with your key, and your full message history comes with you.
